EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative image captures the grandeur and opulence of the English court during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603). The nobleman and knight, both dressed in the latest fashion of the late 16th century, stand before the queen in her throne room. The nobleman wears a trunk hose, a close-fitting breechcloth, and a peascod-bellied doublet, both adorned with elaborate embroidery and rich fabrics. His ruff, a stiff collar worn around the neck, is also intricately decorated. A cloak, lined with ermine, is draped over his shoulders, adding an air of regality. The knight, a member of the Order of the Garter, wears the distinctive blue ribbon and star, signifying his high honor. He dons a copotain hat, a tall, conical hat with a flat top, and a long, flowing cloak. His gown, also made of rich fabric, is worn over his hose and doublet. In his hand, he holds the garter's sceptre, a symbol of his knighthood. Queen Elizabeth I, dressed in a sumptuous gown, sits on her throne, holding the orb and sceptre, symbols of her power and authority. The room is filled with the rich colors and textures of the era, from the velvets and satins to the gold and silver embellishments. The atmosphere is one of grandeur, ceremony, and tradition, as the nobleman and knight pay homage to their queen." Circa 1590, this photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the opulent world of the English court during the Elizabethan era. The intricate details of the costumes, from the trunk hose and canions to the ruffs and copotain hats, transport us back in time, allowing us to imagine the sights, sounds, and sensations of the era. This image is a must-have for anyone interested in English history, costume, or the Tudor period.
