1838 Maidstone Iguanodon Mantell piece a

The famous Mantell piece, a rock slab containing the most complete set of articulated dinosaur bones discovered up to that time - those of an iguanodon found in Maidstone, Kent. It was in the possession of Gideon Mantell and here appears in his " Wonders of Geology" (1838), published by Relphe and Fletcher, drawn by Dinkel and lithographed by George Sharf (with later tinting). From these and other fossil bones Mantell made estimates of the size of this saurian based on extant land iguanas. Indeed this piece is considered the type specimen. The Mantell piece was originally found by a quarry owner, W.H. Bensted. Bensted would not take Mantells offering price of £ 10. It eventually came into Mantells possession only after a group of his friends raised the £ 25 Bensted wanted. It was, as Mantell noted, one of the most extraordinary specimens in Europe

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the famous Mantell piece, a remarkable rock slab containing the most complete set of articulated dinosaur bones discovered up until 1838. The bones belong to an iguanodon and were found in Maidstone, Kent. Gideon Mantell, a renowned scientist and geologist, was fortunate enough to possess this extraordinary specimen. In his book "Wonders of Geology" published in 1838 by Relphe and Fletcher, Mantell featured this incredible find. The illustration itself was drawn by Dinkel and lithographed by George Sharf with later tinting added. This particular piece is considered the type specimen for iguanodons due to its exceptional preservation. Mantell estimated the size of this ancient saurian based on extant land iguanas using these fossil bones as reference points. His meticulous research revolutionized our understanding of dinosaurs during that time. Interestingly, acquiring the Mantell piece wasn't an easy task for Gideon Mantell. Initially offered £10 by quarry owner W. H. Bensted, he had to rely on his friends' support to raise £25 - the price demanded by Bensted - before finally obtaining it. Today, this artwork serves as a testament to both scientific discovery and perseverance in paleontology. It stands as one of Europe's most extraordinary specimens and continues to inspire researchers studying Earth's prehistoric past.
