EDITORS COMMENTS
Battersea Power Station: A Glimpse into the Past before Regeneration This breathtaking aerial photograph, captured by Damian Grady in September 2012 for Historic England, offers a unique perspective of London's iconic Battersea Power Station before the redevelopment began. The image showcases the vast interior of the central hall, its exposed brickwork and industrial machinery standing as a testament to the power station's rich history. The Battersea Power Station, located in the Wandsworth district, was originally built between 1935 and 1951. It was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the Art Deco style and was one of the largest coal-fired power stations in the world at the time. The station's four chimneys, each 185 meters tall, have become an iconic part of the London skyline. The central hall, visible in this photograph, is a remarkable example of the power station's engineering prowess. Measuring 170 meters long and 70 meters wide, it was once home to the station's turbine generators, which produced electricity by converting the energy from steam into mechanical power. The vast space, filled with intricate machinery and towering pipes, is a testament to the industrial revolution that shaped London and the world. As of September 2012, the Battersea Power Station was on the brink of a new chapter in its history. The redevelopment project, which began in 2013, aimed to transform the power station into a mixed-use development, including residential, office, retail, and leisure spaces. This photograph captures a moment in time before the regeneration began, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the power station's industrial heritage.
