EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the regal presence of King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria (1861-1948) in the late 1900s. The monarch, dressed in his official uniform adorned with an impressive array of medals, awards, honors, badges, chains, and the Order of the Garter's star and sash, exudes an aura of power and distinction. King Ferdinand, who ruled Bulgaria from 1908 until his abdication in 1946, was a highly decorated monarch. His military career began at a young age, and he earned numerous decorations for his bravery and leadership during the Balkan Wars and World War I. This photograph, taken around 1909, showcases the King's impressive collection of military honors, which were a testament to his dedication and service to his country. The King's uniform also features the Bulgarian Order of St. Alexander, the national order of chivalry, which was established in 1886. The Order's insignia, a cross pattée with a star and a crown, can be seen prominently displayed on his chest. King Ferdinand's reign was marked by significant political and social changes in Bulgaria, including the adoption of a new constitution and the establishment of a parliamentary system. Despite the challenges he faced, the King remained a popular and respected figure among his people, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in Bulgaria today.
