EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the breathtaking beauty of the Great Lakes as seen from the International Space Station (ISS). The image, taken by an Expedition 31 crew member on June 14,2012, showcases a mesmerizing view of these vast bodies of water that stretch across both the United States and Canada. From this unique vantage point, we can observe Lake Ontario and Lake Huron adorned with a shimmering sunglint effect. In contrast, Lake Erie appears in the upper left corner of the photograph. However, extensive cloud cover obstructs much of central Canada while partially veiling Pennsylvania and the Appalachian mountains in the lower left region. The thin blue haze enveloping Earth's atmosphere is visible above its curved limb at the top edge of this snapshot. This image not only highlights North America's geographical features but also provides valuable meteorological insights into weather patterns and hydrology. As we gaze upon this remarkable composition, it becomes evident why these freshwater lakes hold such significance to both Canadians and Americans alike. With their sparkling waters reflecting sunlight like precious gems amidst a vast landscape, they serve as vital sources for countless rivers and provide sustenance for numerous ecosystems. Thanks to NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY's astronaut photography expertise combined with cutting-edge technology aboard ISS, we are granted an awe-inspiring glimpse into our planet's natural wonders from space.
