Layla and Majnun in the wilderness with animals, from a Khamsa (Quintet)... c. 1590-1600
Layla and Majnun in the wilderness with animals, from a Khamsa (Quintet) of Amir Khusrau Dihlavi, c. 1590-1600. Nestled in the multicoloured rocks are the reunited lovers Layla and Majnun, forced by society to remain separated for years. Majnuns name means " madman, " since the separation drove him past the brink of sanity. Exiling himself to the wilderness, he became emaciated. When Layla found him after a prophetic dream, the wild animals gathered around, drawn to the purity and depth of their love. This painting illustrates a version of the story as told by an Indian author who wrote in Persian. He altered the ending given by previous Persian authors to the ancient Bedouin tale that originated among nomadic tribes of the Arabian Peninsula, in which Layla dies before the couple can be physically reunited

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing scene from the Khamsa (Quintet) of Amir Khusrau Dihlavi, created between 1590 and 1600. Nestled amidst multicolored rocks, we witness the poignant reunion of Layla and Majnun, two lovers torn apart by societal constraints for an agonizingly long time. Majnun's name meaning "madman" reflects his descent into madness due to their separation. Seeking solace in the wilderness, he withered away until Layla discovered him through a prophetic dream. In this painting, we see not only the reunited couple but also an enchanting gathering of wild animals drawn to the purity and depth of their love. This version of the story is narrated by an Indian author who wrote in Persian, deviating from previous Persian authors' endings. Unlike those versions where Layla tragically dies before physical reunion with Majnun can occur, this interpretation offers hope and celebrates their ultimate union. The artwork itself is a masterpiece executed using ink and gold on paper by an artist attributed to Sanwalah Indian during Mughal times. Its vibrant colors and intricate details bring life to every element depicted within it. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print captures not just a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to enduring love that transcends all boundaries imposed upon it throughout history.
