Solar prominence

Solar prominence. SOHO image of a huge prominence in the corona of the Sun. The prominence is a massive cloud of plasma confined by powerful magnetic fields. If it breaks free of the Suns atmosphere, such an event can cause electrical blackouts and auroral storms if directed towards Earth. This image was taken in the light of ionised helium (30.4 nanometres), which corresponds to a temperature of around 60, 000 Kelvin. It was taken on 15th May 2001 by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on board the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing solar prominence, showcasing the immense power and beauty of our Sun. Taken by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, this image reveals a colossal cloud of plasma confined by magnetic fields in the corona. The vibrant colors displayed in this photograph are due to it being taken in the light of ionized helium at 30.4 nanometers, corresponding to a scorching temperature of approximately 60,000 Kelvin. The intricate details visible within the prominence highlight its dynamic nature and active state. While awe-inspiring, such prominences also pose potential threats to Earth's technological infrastructure. If one were to break free from the Sun's atmosphere and head towards our planet, it could cause electrical blackouts and trigger stunning auroral storms. This extraordinary snapshot serves as a reminder of both scientific curiosity and cautionary measures when studying celestial phenomena. It exemplifies humanity's ongoing exploration into astrophysics, cosmology, and understanding our place within the vastness of space. As we admire this remarkable display captured by Science Photo Library in 2001, let us marvel at the wonders that exist beyond our world while appreciating their impact on ours.
