The event was organized to welcome and celebrate the release of several suffragettes who had served their sentences in connection to the Black Friday demonstration that took place in November 1911. Among the released prisoners were notable figures such as Mrs. Leigh, Vera Wentworth, and Olive Wharry. The Black Friday demonstration, a significant turning point in the fight for women's suffrage in the United Kingdom, saw hundreds of suffragettes marching towards Parliament to present a petition to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George. The peaceful protest was met with violent resistance from the police, resulting in numerous arrests and injuries.
