When Cyrus had defeated Astyages and had made himself master of the Median empire, Croesus of Lydia, relying upon help from Babylon and Egypt, marched across the Halys to oppose him. After the battle of Pteria in 547 BC, Croesus retreated to Sardis, which was captured by the Persians in the following year.
