EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a momentous event in London's history - Prince Albert laying the foundation stone of St. Mary's Hospital Paddington in 1845. The scene is filled with an air of anticipation as the crowd gathers around a marquee set up at the North end of Cambridge-place, near the Terminus of the Great Western Railway. The Honorable Architect, Mr. Hopper, hands over a trowel to Prince Albert who takes center stage. With great precision and grace, he spreads mortar onto a polished mahogany board presented by architect Mr. George Russell French. As the one-and-a-half-ton block of grey granite is lowered into place amidst thunderous applause, the band strikes up "God Save the Queen", which resonates through every heart present. This engraving from Illustrated London News captures not only an architectural milestone but also showcases Victorian technology and craftsmanship at its finest. The image reveals men dressed for their respective professions and occupation - architects, builders, press members - all witnessing this ceremonial moment with utmost respect. St Mary's Hospital Paddington holds great promise as it aims to accommodate 150 in-door patients once completed. This photograph immortalizes Prince Albert's contribution to healthcare advancements during his time while highlighting his role as both consort to Queen Victoria and patron of progress.
