Belvedere, the class conscious cat, walks out of the clubs big show

Belvedere, the class conscious cat, walks out of the clubs big show. Belvedere is an elegant blue Persian with very definite ideas about cat shows. He had no objection to being entered for a class restricted to pedigree pets, of course. Won it easily, he did. But when it came to mixing with the plebs in one of those special open classes, it really was asking too much. He took one look at the purring tabbies and ginger toms parading before the judges....and fled. The show, as they say, went on. Without Belvedere. He vanished from the exhibition hall at Londons Alexandra Palace, where the show was being staged by the Herts and Middlesex Cat Club. This naturally caused considerable distress to his owner, actress Car men Dene, 21, of Dagenham (although it had the most useful effect of ensuring that she remained the centre of attention. Miss Dene searched everywhere. And while she searched, the Daily Mirror National Pets Club cup for the cat of the year was presented to a common or garden tabby called Charlie. Until last week, four-year-old Charlie was homeless. He was looked after by Mrs. Cissie Walledge, who runs a cat sanctuary in Oxford-road, Lower Edmonton. His new owners have asked Mrs. Walledge to keep the cup. A couple of hours after the show, some helpful maintenance men found Belvedere. Under the floorboards of an adjoining office. Fast asleep. Rescued! Belvedere is lifted to safety by workmen as Carmen looks on. September 1966 P000640

Belvedere, the Class Conscious Cat, Makes a Dramatic Exit from the Club's Big Show

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured in September 1966 at London's Alexandra Palace, we witness Belvedere, an elegant blue Persian with discerning taste and a strong sense of class distinction. As the show progressed and Belvedere found himself surrounded by common tabbies and ginger toms vying for attention from judges, he decided that enough was enough. With one disdainful glance at his feline counterparts parading before him, Belvedere made a swift escape from the exhibition hall. His sudden disappearance caused distress to his owner, actress Carmen Dene. However, it also ensured that she remained in the spotlight as concerned onlookers searched high and low for her beloved pet. Meanwhile, fate had other plans for another furry friend named Charlie - a homeless tabby who unexpectedly stole the show. Despite his humble origins under Mrs. Cissie Walledge's care at an Oxford-road cat sanctuary in Lower Edmonton, Charlie was crowned with the prestigious Daily Mirror National Pets Club cup for Cat of the Year. Just when all hope seemed lost for finding Belvedere safe and sound again, some helpful maintenance men discovered him fast asleep beneath neighboring office floorboards. With Carmen anxiously looking on, workmen carefully lifted him to safety - rescuing our elusive protagonist. This extraordinary tale reminds us that even cats have their own unique personalities and preferences when it comes to socializing within their feline community.
