EDITORS COMMENTS
Butcher's Broom, Ruscus aculeatus, is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured woodblock print by Wolfgang Meyerpick, based on an original illustration by Giorgio Liberale from Pietro Andrea Mattioli's "Discorsi di P.A. Matthioli ne i sei libri della Materia Medicinale di Pedacio Dioscoride Anazarbeo," published in Venice in 1568. The botanical name "Ruscus aculeatus" refers to the plant's club-shaped rhizomes, which resemble the brooms used by butchers, hence the common name. The intricate detail in this print showcases the plant's distinctive features, including its evergreen leaves, which are arranged in two rows along the stem, and its small, yellow-green flowers that bloom in late winter or early spring. Butcher's Broom has a long history of medicinal use, dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was used to treat various ailments, including hemorrhoids, edema, and circulatory issues. The woodblock printing process involved carving the design into a block of wood, inking the surface, and pressing the ink onto paper to create the final image. The addition of handcolouring enhanced the print's visual appeal and accuracy by adding detail and depth to the illustration. This beautiful print is a testament to the artistry and scientific knowledge of the time and serves as a reminder of the rich history of botanical exploration and medicinal discovery.
