EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored woodblock print depicts Bittercress, a member of the Cardamine species, as illustrated by Giorgio Liberale for Pietro Andrea Mattioli's seminal work, "Discorsi di P.A. Matthioli ne i sei libri della Materia Medicinale di Pedacio Dioscoride Anazarbeo," published in Venice in 1568. The print was later produced by Wolfgang Meyerpick. Bittercress, also known as Cardamine hirsuta or Dentaria jamesiana, is a low-growing herb native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Its distinctive white or pink flowers bloom in clusters, with oblong leaves that are toothed along the edges. Bittercress was highly valued in traditional medicine for its medicinal properties. The plant was believed to have cooling and astringent effects, and was used to treat various ailments including sore throats, coughs, and gastrointestinal issues. The plant's bitter taste was attributed to its high alkaloid content, which was believed to be responsible for its therapeutic properties. The intricately detailed woodblock print showcases the beauty and complexity of the Bittercress plant, with its delicate flowers and veined leaves rendered in vivid colors. The meticulous craftsmanship of the print reflects the high standards of botanical illustration during the Renaissance period, when natural history was a source of great fascination and scientific discovery. Today, the print serves as a testament to the rich history of botanical exploration and the enduring beauty of the natural world.
