EDITORS COMMENTS
Anthony Frederick Wilding: A Tennis Champion's Tragic End In this evocative black and white portrait, New Zealand tennis player Anthony Frederick Wilding is captured at the height of his athletic prime. At just twenty-two years old, Wilding had already made history as the first player to win the Wimbledon Men's Singles Championship an unprecedented three years in a row, from 1910 to 1912. His dominance on the tennis court was a testament to his skill, determination, and grace. However, this image was taken in 1916, two years after Wilding's championship run came to an end. In 1914, he was defeated by Australian Norman Brookes in straight sets, marking the end of an era in tennis. But the end of Wilding's tennis career was not the end of his story. As the shadow of war loomed over Europe, Wilding, a British subject, answered the call to duty. He joined the British Army and was sent to the Western Front. Tragically, on May 9, 1915, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge, Wilding was killed in action. This poignant portrait serves as a reminder of Wilding's remarkable athletic achievements and his ultimate sacrifice for his country. The image captures the essence of a young, handsome, and talented sportsman whose life was cut short by the horrors of war. Wilding's legacy as a tennis champion and a brave soldier continues to inspire and captivate us to this day.
