EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning front south facade of the Camberwell Leisure Centre, formerly known as Camberwell Public Baths. Located in Artichoke Place, Camberwell, Southwark, Greater London, this historic building holds a significant place in the city's architectural heritage. Designed by Henry Spalding and Alfred Cross and constructed between 1890-91, these baths were one of Cross's earliest ventures into public bath design. Later on, he became renowned for his expertise in this field. The Victorian-era indoor swimming pool exudes charm with its intricate brickwork and timeless elegance. After years of wear and tear, the baths underwent an extensive restoration project from 2010 to 2013 at a staggering cost exceeding £5 million. This meticulous restoration aimed to preserve the building's original features while incorporating modern amenities for contemporary use. The print captures not only the beauty of this restored gem but also pays homage to its rich history as a hub for sport and recreation within the community. It stands as a testament to both architectural excellence and cultural significance. Simon Inglis skillfully captured this image on behalf of Historic England – an organization dedicated to preserving England's historical landmarks. Through his lens, we are transported back in time while appreciating the efforts made towards restoring such iconic structures that continue to shape our urban landscape today.
