Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photographic print from the ethnographic album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," volume 1, published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. This image, specifically sheet 38 from the album, was created by the German ethnographer Karl Fiale. The photograph showcases three members of the Votyak or Udmurt people, who were among the numerous ethnic groups inhabiting the Russian Empire during the late 19th century. The trio consists of a woman named Zyryanka, a man named Votyachka, and a child named Votyak, all identified by their traditional names. The Votyaks were an indigenous Finno-Ugric people residing primarily in the forested regions of the Vyatka River basin in the European part of Russia. The album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" was a significant work dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, marking the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. The publication consisted of two volumes. The first volume featured 62 colored illustrations, including this photograph, depicting various ethnic groups in their traditional dress. Additionally, the volume included a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and their populations in the cities of the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map. The second volume was entirely text-based, containing detailed essays about the ethnic groups, their history, culture, language, and more. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural diversity of the Russian Empire during the 1860s, providing valuable insights into the lives and traditions of the Votyak people. The ethnographic knowledge presented in the album reflects the state of anthropological and historical understanding during that time.
