EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century print depicts the grand wedding ceremony of Jacoba of Bavaria, Countess of Holland, and Jan IV, Duke of Brabant, which took place on 10 March 1418. The event took place in the gothic architecture of the Church of Our Lady in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. The newlyweds, dressed in their finest attire, exchange rings and blessings in the presence of a crowded congregation, including important figures of the aristocracy and the Burgundian court. Jacoba of Bavaria, also known as Jacqueline of Hainaut or Jacqueline de Bavière, was the daughter of John III, Duke of Bavaria. Jan IV, Duke of Brabant, also known as John IV of Burgundy or Jean IV de Bourgogne, was the Duke of Brabant and Limburg. The union of these two powerful families was significant in the political landscape of the time. The print, created by the renowned Flemish painter Jakob Josef Eeckhout (1595-1652), captures the grandeur and splendor of the occasion with intricate detail. The use of rich colors and the large group of figures adds to the sense of ceremony and importance of the event. The interior of the church, with its high arches and intricate stonework, serves as a fitting backdrop for this historic moment in the lives of Jacoba and Jan IV. This print is a valuable piece of heritage art, showcasing the grandeur and opulence of the aristocracy during the 15th century. It is a reminder of the importance of family alliances and political marriages in the European political landscape of the time, as well as the artistic and cultural achievements of the period.
