His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales laying the first stone of the Lambeth School of Art, 1860. Creator: Unknown

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales laying the first stone of the Lambeth School of Art, [London], 1860. The laying of the foundation-stone...by his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, who for the first time took part as a principal in a public ceremony, was a graceful commencement of his public duties, and a welcome declaration of the interest he takes in the furtherance of the study of art among his future subjects, and of a warm desire for the improvement of the manufacturing and commercial destinies of the country at large...His Royal Highness, accompanied by Sir C. Phipps, Colonel Brace, and Lieutenant-Colonel Keppel...was enthusiastically cheered by the large body of spectators assembled to view the ceremony...his Royal Highness, with the customary formalities, laid the stone, saying as he did so, "In the faith of Jesus Christ we place this foundation-stone; in the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. Amen."...The school, designed by Mr. Pearson, will be an extensive building, and be built hi the style of the thirteenth century; but the funds in the hands of the committee will be practically applied, and not frittered away in useless ornamentation'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Great image capturing a significant moment in the history of art education in London, with His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales laying the foundation stone of the Lambeth School of Art in 1860. The Prince, accompanied by Sir C. Phipps, Colonel Brace, and Lieutenant-Colonel Keppel, is seen here in formal attire, surrounded by a large crowd of spectators eager to witness the ceremony. The laying of the foundation stone marked the beginning of the Prince's public duties and his commitment to supporting the study of art among his future subjects. The event was met with great enthusiasm from the crowd, who cheered heartily as the Prince performed the formalities of the ceremony. The Lambeth School of Art, designed by Mr. Pearson, was to be an extensive building, inspired by the architectural style of the thirteenth century. The funds raised for the construction were to be used effectively, with no wasted resources on unnecessary ornamentation. This photograph is a testament to the importance placed on art education during this period and the significant role the Royal Family played in promoting it. The Prince's involvement in the ceremony was a welcome declaration of his support for the arts and a promising sign for the future of the school. The image is from the "Illustrated London News," a renowned publication at the time, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering insights into the people, events, and architectural styles of the Victorian era.
