The last resting-place of the late Earl Canning in the North Transept of Westminster Abbey, 1862. 'The mortal remains of the ex-Viceroy of India were on the 21st June committed to the grave at the foot of his father's statue...the same grave at the head of which Charles John Canning, the orphan Eton boy, stood thirty-five years ago, supported by the Dukes of Clarence and Sussex, and surrounded by distinguished statesmen, amongst whom was Lord Palmerston, who has been spared to take part in the touching and solemn ceremonial of Saturday week'. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph taken in 1862, the last resting-place of Charles John Canning's grave is seen in the North Transept of Westminster Abbey. The Earl of Canning, a prominent figure in British politics and colonial administration, passed away on June 17th that year. His mortal remains were laid to rest at the foot of his father's statue, surrounded by marble monuments and ornate stone carvings.
The photograph captures the solemnity and reverence with which those who attended the funeral paid their respects to the late Earl. The grave itself is a testament to Canning's legacy as Viceroy of India, where he played a significant role in shaping British colonial policy during his tenure from 1856-1862.
This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of mortality and the fleeting nature of human life. It also highlights the significance placed on honoring those who have passed away through elaborate memorials and rituals. The photograph's stark black-and-white tones add to its emotional impact, evoking feelings of contemplation and reflection in all who gaze upon it.
