EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken in 1876, The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, performs the ceremonial investiture of the Right Hon. William Henry Gregory as a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George. The event took place in the grand Hall of the Old Kandyan Kings in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), during the British Raj. Gregory, an accomplished administrator, served as the Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Ceylon and its dependencies. The Kandyan chiefs, dressed in traditional attire, were brought before the Prince in groups of four to be formally presented by the officers in charge of their respective districts. The Prince of Wales, wearing the uniform of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, confers the honour upon Gregory with great formality. The atmosphere is filled with the pomp and grandeur of the British colonial administration. This photograph, originally a sketch by a special artist for the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the imperialist politics of the 19th century. The investiture ceremony symbolizes the British monarchy's power and influence over its colonies, as well as the hierarchical nature of the colonial administration. The photograph is a testament to the historical significance of the British Raj and the role of its administrators in shaping the political landscape of the Indian subcontinent. It also highlights the importance of the press in documenting and disseminating news and images of imperial events to a global audience.
