This exquisite portrait captures the elegant and regal presence of Duchess Maria Feodorovna, also known as Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg (1759-1828). The painting, created in the Rococo style by the renowned Scottish artist Alexander Roslin (1718-1793) or his studio, showcases the Duchess's refined beauty and grace. At the time, Maria Feodorovna was the wife of Tsar Paul I of Russia (1754-1801), who ascended to the throne in 1796. Born in Württemberg, Germany, Maria Feodorovna was the daughter of Duke Frederick Eugene of Württemberg and Princess Frederica Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt. Her marriage to Paul I, who was then the heir to the Russian throne, took place in 1776. The union was politically motivated, as Paul I sought to strengthen Russia's ties with Europe. The portrait depicts Maria Feodorovna wearing the insignia of the Order of St. Catherine, a prestigious Russian order, which she had received in 1797. Her elegant attire, adorned with intricate lace and embroidery, reflects the opulence of the Russian court during this period. Maria Feodorovna's marriage to Paul I was marked by political intrigue and power struggles. Paul I was known for his authoritarian rule, and his relationship with his wife was tumultuous. Despite this, Maria Feodorovna continued to serve as the empress consort until Paul I's assassination in 1801. After Paul I's death, Maria Feodorovna returned to Sweden, where she had been raised, and lived out the remainder of her days in exile. This portrait, created during her time as the empress consort of Russia, serves as a testament to her regal bearing and the complex history of the Russian monarchy during this period.
