Ploughing by Steam - Trial at Grimsthorpe, by Lord Willoughby d'Eresby, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Ploughing by Steam - Trial at Grimsthorpe, by Lord Willoughby d'Eresby, 1850. Various interesting experiments have been made from time to time, with the object of adapting steam-power to the working of the plough. The scene...represents a trial recently made in this way, at Grimsthorpe, in Lincolnshire, by Lord Willoughby D'Eresby. The machinery employed consisted of a small locomotive engine, with a capstan attached, moving on a portable railway. An ordinary plough, followed closely by a subsoil plough, was drawn by a chain from the capstan, working with perfect precision, and at a greater depth and speed than usual. Several gentlemen and farmers, who were present, expressed a favourable opinion of the experiment'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts a significant moment in agricultural history: the trial of steam-powered ploughing at Grimsthorpe, Lincolnshire, in 1850, carried out by the esteemed aristocrat, Lord Willoughby D'Eresby. The photograph, an engraving from the Illustrated London News, captures the innovative spirit of the Industrial Revolution as various experiments were conducted to adapt steam-power to the traditional farming practice of ploughing. The machinery used for this trial consisted of a small locomotive engine, coupled with a capstan, mounted on a portable railway. An ordinary plough, accompanied by a subsoil plough, was drawn by a chain from the capstan, working with remarkable precision, depth, and speed. Several gentlemen and farmers, who were present, expressed their favorable opinions of the experiment. Lord Willoughby D'Eresby, also known as Peter Robert Drummond Burrell, 22nd Baron Willoughby de Eresby, was a prominent figure in the agricultural community during the 19th century. His innovative approach to farming, as evidenced by this trial, showcased his forward-thinking mindset and commitment to advancing agricultural techniques. This photograph, taken in the heart of the British countryside, represents a pivotal moment in the mechanization of agriculture, as the agricultural industry began to embrace the power of steam to increase productivity and efficiency. The scene is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the farmers, inventors, and aristocrats of the time who sought to revolutionize the way farming was carried out.
