The Peninsular and Oriental Navigation Company's New Steam-ship "Pera", 1856. This fine screw steam-ship, which was built by Messrs. Mare, of Blackwall, from designs by Mr. James Ash, made an official trial of her speed over the measured mile in Stokes Bay...her fine lines, when compared with her breadth of beam, have caused her, for power in comparison with tonnage, to be under steam one of the fastest screw-vessels afloat...The engines during the trial averaged 33 revolutions, or 66 entire turns of the screw, per minute. The wind was blowing strong from the south-south-west, and after the topgallant yards had been lowered the average of four runs showed a speed of 12½ knots...the result proved highly satisfactory to every one present, the impression being that an average of not more than twelve knots would be obtained'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the Peninsular and Oriental Navigation Company's latest addition to its steamship fleet, the "Pera," in 1856. The ship was meticulously crafted by Mare, Blackwall, based on the designs of James Ash. During an official trial in Stokes Bay, the "Pera" demonstrated her impressive speed, making her one of the fastest screw-vessels at sea in terms of power-to-tonnage ratio. The trial revealed that the "Pera's" engines averaged 33 revolutions, or 66 full turns of the screw, per minute. Despite the strong south-south-west wind, which required the lowering of the topgallant yards, the average speed of four runs was a remarkable 12½ knots. The trial results left everyone present feeling highly satisfied, with expectations set that an average of no more than twelve knots would be achieved. The "Pera's" sleek lines, with her relatively narrow beam, were a sight to behold. Her innovative design and impressive performance were a testament to the ingenuity and progress of the steamship era. This photograph, taken by renowned photographer Edwin Weedon, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the beauty and power of this remarkable vessel.
