Opening of the South Indian Railway between Tuticorin and Madura, Madras Presidency... 1876. Creator: Unknown
Opening of the South Indian Railway between Tuticorin and Madura, Madras Presidency: Natives waiting to see the Prince [of Wales], from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876....the Prince...started on his journey along the metre-guage [sic] line from Tuticorin to Trichinopoly, which, indeed, as far as Madura, he opened and hand-selled, the line having only just been completed in time for his journey, and only opened to the public a few days after his transit over it. All along this line the crowds of natives waiting to see the Prince was a most striking aspect of the ceremony. They formed, as it were, a living decoration; and all classes came out, even the very poorest. Some were well dressed, and others had scarce an article upon them. They waited patiently, and did not seem to give the police much trouble. At places a bamboo was put up as a barrier, behind which they stood'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in the opening of the South Indian Railway between Tuticorin and Madura in the Madras Presidency, India, in 1876. The Prince of Wales, a prominent figure in British colonial rule, embarked on a journey along the newly completed metre-gauge line from Tuticorin to Trichinopoly. The railway, which had only just been finished in time for his visit, was opened to the public only a few days later. The image portrays a sea of natives, eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of the Prince. They formed a living decoration along the railway line, representing all classes and socio-economic backgrounds. Some were well-dressed, while others were barely clothed. Despite the large crowds, the natives waited patiently and caused minimal trouble for the authorities. At certain points, bamboo barriers were erected to keep the onlookers at a safe distance. The Prince's visit marked a significant milestone in the development of the railway network in South India, bringing people closer to the modern world and facilitating trade and commerce. This photograph is a testament to the excitement and anticipation that surrounded the opening of the railway and the profound impact it had on the lives of the local population.
