EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Beacon of Hope: The New Hospital for French Protestants, Victoria Park (1865)**
This stunning photograph captures the grandeur and elegance of a new hospital built in London's Victoria Park to serve the needs of French Protestant refugees. Completed in 1865, this magnificent structure was designed by architect Mr. R.L. Roumieu and constructed by Messrs. Longmire and Burge.
The building's façade is adorned with ornamental brickwork and stone carvings, evoking the classic style of an old French chateau. The interior features a spacious day-room for men, one for women, as well as a refectory, committee room, workrooms, store rooms, lavatories for both genders, and even a small chapel that can accommodate approximately 100 people.
The upper floors are reserved for the nurses' quarters, stewards' rooms, patient bedrooms with en-suite baths and storage facilities. The building is equipped with state-of-the-art heating systems using Price's patent hot-water apparatus in addition to fireplaces. Hot and cold water pipes run throughout the facility, ensuring a comfortable living environment.
A series of lifts facilitates the transportation of meals from downstairs kitchens up to the patient floors, while another lift handles heavy items such as medical equipment or supplies. This remarkable hospital was built with compassion and care for those seeking refuge in London's Victoria Park community.
