Music stand for the Panama Francis Savoy Sultans, ca. 1974
Panama Francis (1918-2001) was an African-American swing jazz drummer who played on numerous hit recordings in the 1950s. A foldable music stand. It appears to be made of hardboard, finished with a glossy white paint that gives the appearance of metal. It has a curved front panel with black text, a red treble clef symbol, and a red bass clef symbol that appears hand-painted. Text reads [PANAMA / FRANCIS / SAVOY SULTANS]. Attached to the back side of the front panel are four (4) hinged panels that form an open box when unfolded. The top panel acts as a music rest. It has a round hole at the top center and a hinged ledge. Pink sticker on the underside of the music ledge with gold text that reads [FASHION-FOLD / MUSIC STAND / PATENTED / HUMES & BERG MFG CO. / INC / East Chicago, Ind]. Above the text is a gold graphic of a pair of beamed eighth notes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a music stand that once belonged to the legendary African-American swing jazz drummer, Panama Francis. Created around 1974, this foldable music stand is constructed from hardboard and finished with a glossy white paint that mimics the appearance of metal. The front panel features elegant black text, hand-painted red treble and bass clef symbols, and proudly displays the name "PANAMA FRANCIS SAVOY SULTANS". When unfolded, four hinged panels attached to the back side form an open box structure. The top panel acts as a convenient music rest, complete with a round hole at its center and a hinged ledge for holding sheet music. A pink sticker on the underside of the music ledge reveals intriguing details about its origin - it bears gold text stating "FASHION-FOLD MUSIC STAND PATENTED HUMES & BERG MFG CO. INC East Chicago, Ind". Above this text lies a charming gold graphic depicting a pair of beamed eighth notes. This artifact not only represents Panama Francis's contribution to jazz history but also highlights the craftsmanship of Humes & Berg Manufacturing Co. , who produced this innovative design. Preserved within the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this piece serves as both an object of cultural heritage and testament to Francis's impact on American music during his time in the Savoy Sultans band. With its unique blend of functionality and artistic flair, this vintage music stand stands as an emblematic symbol of creativity in 20th-century America.
