EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Senator Moses Edwin Clapp of Minnesota is seen in a formal meeting with James C. Haynes, the Mayor of Minneapolis, in 1911. Both men are dressed in the fashion of the early 20th century, with Senator Clapp wearing a bowler hat and a three-piece suit, and Mayor Haynes donning a more casual, single-breasted suit. Moses Edwin Clapp (1856-1928) was a prominent lawyer and politician from Minnesota. He served as the Attorney General of Minnesota from 1887 to 1893 and was later elected as a Senator to the United States Congress, serving from 1901 to 1917. James C. Haynes (1858-1931) was also a lawyer and served as the Mayor of Minneapolis from 1907 to 1911. He was known for his progressive policies and was a strong advocate for public health and safety. The photograph was taken by Harris & Ewing, a well-known photographic studio based in Washington, D.C. at the time. The studio was founded by George W. Harris and Martha Ewing in 1896 and became one of the most prominent photographic studios in the United States, known for its high-quality glass negatives and portraits of politicians and other notable figures. This photograph is a valuable historical record of two important Minnesota political figures in the early 20th century, captured in a formal setting by one of the most renowned photographic studios of the time. It provides a glimpse into the fashion and style of the era and offers insight into the political landscape of Minnesota during this period.
