Monastery of St. George, near Balaclava - from a sketch by Lieut. Montagu O'Reilly, 1854. The monastery of St. George hangs, as it were, to the face of the cliff, and the only entrance to it is by a door and flight of steps cut into the rock at its summit. From a little terrace in front, a magnificent view over the Black Sea is obtained...[The monastery is] comfortably sheltered by the cliffs behind it from the cold winds which come across the barren steppes of the Crimea. The building consists of a small church, a large refectory, and some cells of medium size..."We descended by a narrow zigzag path, cut in the face of the mountain, on every nook or ledge of which the monks have planted trees and flowers, making little terraced gardens in the midst of the black charred cliffs. From the shore we looked up and perceived the monastery, some hundreds of feet above us...". From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative sketch of the Monastery of St. George, near Balaclava, was created by Lieut. Montagu O'Reilly in 1854. The monastery, nestled against the cliffside, is accessible only through a door and a flight of steps carved into the rock at its summit. The monastery offers a breathtaking view of the Black Sea, shielded from the harsh winds that sweep across the Crimean steppes. The monastery complex comprises a small church, a large refectory, and several medium-sized cells. The building clings precariously to the cliff face, providing a striking contrast against the barren landscape. Descending the narrow, zigzag path carved into the mountain, one can appreciate the monks' ingenuity in creating terraced gardens on every available nook and ledge. From the shoreline, the monastery appears as a distant, ethereal silhouette, perched hundreds of feet above. This sketch, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, offers a glimpse into the monastery's serene beauty and the monks' resilience in creating a sanctuary amidst the rugged terrain. The image transports us back in time, inviting us to imagine the tranquility and spirituality that once pervaded this sacred place.
