Her Majesty the Queen Laying the Foundation-Stone of Wellington College, near Sandhurst, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Her Majesty the Queen Laying the Foundation-Stone of Wellington College, near Sandhurst, 1856. Founding of a college...for the education of the orphan sons of officers of the Royal Army, and of the Army of the Hon. East India Company...the bands struck up the National Anthem, and the heavy salvoes of the Royal salute were almost drowned by the cheers...The stone was a massive slab of solid polished granite. Beneath it was a deep recess, in which her Majesty placed a glass tube containing new specimens of all the current coins of the realm...the stone [was] then covered with cement; and her Majesty, taking an elaborate silver-gilt trowel...spread it out smoothly. The upper stone was then lowered...the Queen struck it three blows with an ebony and ivory mallet - then, taking the silver plumb and rule, tested its accuracy, and declared it "well and duly fixed". EDITORS COMMENTS
Great image capturing a historic moment in British history: Her Majesty the Queen, likely Queen Victoria, laying the foundation stone of Wellington College in 1856. The college, located near Sandhurst, was established for the education of orphaned sons of officers in the British Army and the Army of the Honourable East India Company. The occasion was marked with grandeur, as evidenced by the military band striking up the National Anthem and the Royal salute being fired. The foundation stone was a massive slab of polished granite, with a deep recess beneath it. Inside the recess, new specimens of all the current coins of the realm were placed for safekeeping. The stone was then covered with cement, and the Queen, using an elaborate silver-gilt trowel, spread it out smoothly. The upper stone was then lowered into place, and the Queen struck it three times with an ebony and ivory mallet. Finally, she tested the accuracy of the stone using a silver plumb and rule and declared it "well and duly fixed." This image is a testament to the grandeur and tradition of British monarchy and military history. The significance of the occasion is palpable, and the meticulous attention to detail in the foundation-laying ceremony underscores the importance of the college and its mission to provide education to the orphaned sons of military officers.
