Kelso, Roxburghshire, lately visited by the Prince and Princess of Wales, 1865. Creator: Unknown
Kelso, Roxburghshire, lately visited by the Prince and Princess of Wales, 1865. 'On the recent occasion of the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe, at Floors Castle, we gave a View of that mansion; and we now present one of the town of Kelso, from which Floors Castle is distant scarcely a mile. This town is beautifully situated, at the confluence of the Tweed and the Teviot, but on the left or north bank of the Tweed, thirty-eight miles south-east of Edinburgh. It was originally a mere suburb of the ancient town of Roxburgh, which was destroyed in the Scottish Border wars of the fifteenth century, leaving but the mere ruins of Roxburgh Castle, just opposite to Floors. The present town has a population of about 6000, with a market of some importance. Its most interesting architectural monument is the abbey, founded in the twelfth century, partly of the Norman and partly of the Early Pointed Gothic style. The poet Thomson was a native of Ednam, a hamlet near Kelso'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
A picturesque snapshot of Kelso, Roxburghshire, taken in the midst of royal visitation. In September 1865, Prince and Princess Wales paid a courtesy call to Floors Castle, residence of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe. As they strolled through this charming town on Scotland's southern border, our photographer captured its essence - nestled at the confluence of the Tweed and Teviot rivers. With a population of around 6,000 inhabitants and an important market hub, Kelso boasts architectural treasures like the ancient abbey, founded in the twelfth century. This Norman-Pointed Gothic gem is said to have inspired Scotland's beloved poet Robert Thomson, who hailed from nearby Ednam hamlet. As our photograph reveals, Kelso's tranquil atmosphere was no doubt a welcome respite for the royal couple during their visit.
