Jesus Christ. Plate 12. From: Christ and the Apostles, 1548. Creator: Lambert Suavius
Jesus Christ. Plate 12. From: Christ and the Apostles, 1548. This is the twelfth of 14 engravings depicting Christ, St Paul and the Twelve Apostles. Alone of the prints, Christ is not placed in an architectural setting and again, unlike all the Apostles, who are viewed in various profile vantage points, he is rigorously frontal, formal and symmetrical, surrounded by a mandorla of clouds. The eyeballs are left blank, the effect of which, like the plinth on which he stands, is to suggest classical statuary. Above all, the print aims to emphasise Christ's divinity

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking print from Christ and the Apostles (1548), artist Lambert Suavius captures a powerful image of Jesus Christ. Unlike other depictions, where he is often placed in an architectural setting or viewed at an angle, Jesus stands frontal and symmetrical, surrounded by a majestic mandorla of clouds. The blank eyeballs add to his divine presence, evoking the classical statuary of ancient Greece and Rome. This engraving not only emphasizes Christ's divinity but also showcases Suavius' mastery of artistic technique. Created in the 16th century during the Dutch Renaissance, this print is a testament to the enduring power of art to convey spiritual truths.
