Francis Arthur Fraser's "Hunting Scene: Horse and Thrown Rider," created between 1867 and 1883, captures the thrill and danger of fox hunting in England during the 19th century. Three men on horseback are shown in the midst of an accident. The rider in the foreground has been thrown off his horse after the animal became stubborn and refused to cross a ditch. His horse rears up, its hooves kicking in the air. The other two riders have dismounted to help their fallen comrade. The incident is reminiscent of the traditional English pastime of fox hunting, a sport that required great skill, courage, and a strong bond between man and horse. The use of pen and ink, with its ability to create intricate lines and shading, perfectly captures the texture of the horses' coats and the rugged terrain.
