General Robert Edmund Lee, Commander-In-Chief of the Army of the Confederate States of America, 1864 Creator: Unknown

General Robert Edmund [sic] Lee, Commander-In-Chief of the Army of the Confederate States of America, 1864. Engraving from a photograph by Messrs. Minnis and Cowell, '...a faithful likeness of one of the greatest soldiers of this age. Three years' campaigns, in defence of his native State of Virginia - undertaken, doubtless, from motives of patriotism - have shown his consummate mastery of the art of war, which he had learned as an officer in the service of the formerly United States. General Lee has proved himself to possess, in high perfection, that peculiar combination of moral and intellectual qualities which fits a man for military command. Since the fighting days of Wellington and Napoleon there has been no more signal example of ability for the direction and control of a large army...Even his opponents, who would not have deemed it creditable to themselves to underrate the genius which has so long held them in check on the road from Washington to Richmond, have owned his superiority to all the successive generals of the Federal army. The biography of this eminent man will be written when his figure shall have emerged from the bewildering conflict of the civil war. His personal and professional merits will then be justly appreciated'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
**A Leader in War: General Robert Edmund Lee, Commander-in-Chief of the Army of Confederate States** This striking print captures a momentous portrait of General Robert Edmund Lee, commander-in-chief of the Army of Confederate States during the tumultuous years leading up to and including the American Civil War. The photograph was taken by Messrs. Minnis and Cowell in 1864, an era marked by intense battles on multiple fronts. Lee's reputation as a master strategist had already been solidified through three years of campaigns defending his native Virginia from Union forces. His exceptional leadership skills were honed during his time serving the United States military, where he learned valuable lessons that would later serve him well in commanding large armies. As commander-in-chief, Lee proved himself to be an unparalleled leader on the battlefield, earning respect even among those who opposed him. The Illustrated London News praised his abilities in 1864: "Since the fighting days of Wellington and Napoleon there has been no more signal example of ability for the direction and control of a large army...Even his opponents have owned his superiority to all successive generals of the Federal army." This print serves as a testament to Lee's enduring legacy, one that would be forever etched in history alongside some of the most iconic military leaders. As we gaze upon this portrait, we are reminded not only of Lee's remarkable achievements but also of the complex and tumultuous era he navigated with such distinction.
