EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1887, features four prominent African-American figures: Reverend Francis Lewis Cardozo, John S. Leary, John Oliver Crosby, and Dr. Edward S. Porter. Cardozo, dressed in formal attire, made history as the first African American to be elected Secretary of State in South Carolina, a significant milestone in American history. John S. Leary, wearing a suit and tie, was a trailblazing lawyer and politician in North Carolina. He was one of the first black lawyers in the state and the first dean of the law school at Shaw University. John Oliver Crosby, dressed in a suit and vest, is depicted with a serious expression. He was the first president of what is now North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a pioneering institution for African American education. Dr. Edward S. Porter, the only one in the photograph wearing a medical coat, was a dedicated physician who served at various institutions in Louisville, including the city sanitary force, the Orphan's home, an insane asylum, and Simmons College of Kentucky. This photograph is a testament to the resilience, determination, and achievements of African Americans during the 19th century. It is a poignant reminder of the progress made in the areas of education, politics, and medicine, and the continued importance of celebrating the cultural heritage and human rights of all people. This photograph is part of the collection of the New York Public Library and is a valuable addition to any collection focusing on African American history, social history, or 19th-century America.
