This photograph, taken in 1887, features four prominent African-American figures: Reverend Francis Lewis Cardozo, John S. Leary, John Oliver Crosby, and Dr. Edward S. Porter. Cardozo, dressed in formal attire, made history as the first African American to be elected Secretary of State in South Carolina, a significant milestone in American history. John S. Leary, wearing a suit and tie, was a trailblazing lawyer and politician in North Carolina. He was one of the first black lawyers in the state and the first dean of the law school at Shaw University.
