This evocative image captures the moment of unity and camaraderie between the citizens of Waterford, Ireland, and the 89th Regiment as they prepared to depart for the Crimean War in 1854. The scene takes place in the Town-Hall, where a grand "dejeuner," or lunch, was held as a public farewell for the regiment. The photo shows a sea of people from all classes and creeds gathered together, their faces filled with pride and admiration for the soldiers and officers about to embark on a dangerous journey to defend their country. The Union Jack, the Tricolour, and the Crescent flags are prominently displayed over the Mayor's seat, symbolizing the unity and diversity of the community coming together in support of the regiment. The speeches given during the event were filled with words of encouragement and patriotism. The Mayor addressed the soldiers, reminding them of their brave comrades who had never turned their backs on their enemies and urging them to lead the van and send the Russian eagles back home, stripped of their feathers and claws. The crowd responded with immense and prolonged cheers, their voices echoing through the Town-Hall, filled with hope and determination. This poignant moment in history serves as a reminder of the power of community and the sacrifices made by soldiers and their supporters during times of war.
