Cossacks, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Cossacks, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Cossacks, 1909," was created by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev. The image is part of the collection "Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home," which consists of three albums showcasing the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks residing in western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan.
These remarkable albums were specially commissioned for display at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition held in Omsk in 1911. They were curated by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society between 1891 and 1918. Photographer N.G. Katanaev captured these photographs during his journey to various Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later known as Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk oblasts) in 1909.
The featured photograph portrays a group portrait set against an outdoor backdrop. It showcases a diverse gathering comprising men, women, children - all dressed in traditional attire that reflects their rich heritage. The direct gazes from some individuals add an intriguing element to this still image.
Preserved within Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife today as part of Russia's historical legacy; this photograph serves as a window into a bygone era. It offers us a glimpse into village life among these resilient Slavic people who played significant roles within their communities.
Katanaev's skillful composition captures not only their clothing but also hints at their customs and traditions through subtle details like fences surrounding them or expressions on faces looking directly at the camera lens.
As we admire this snapshot frozen in time from over a century ago; it reminds us how photography can be both an art form capturing history while preserving cultural heritage for generations to come.
