Conflict between the Natives of Samoa and the Crew of H.M.S. Barracouta, 1876. Creator: Unknown
Conflict between the Natives of Samoa and the Crew of H.M.S. Barracouta, 1876. Engraving after a sketch by Assistant Paymaster Rudge....the King, Captain Stevens, the Consuls, and the friendly chiefs, accompanied by a guard of honour from the Barracouta...proceeded to Mulininu...Sub-Lieutenant Ommanney reported...that armed natives were moving through the bush. The Captain immediately sent directions to the senior Lieutenant to intercept them. So little were any hostile proceedings expected that, up to this moment, the guns of the marines were not loaded. Lieutenant M'Leod penetrated through the bush, entered a hut with five of his men, and discovered it to be full of armed natives...He desired the natives to give up their arms, which they declined to do. As he was proceeding to enforce his demands, a shot was heard outside...and a general action commenced'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative engraving depicts the intense conflict between the native people of Samoa and the crew of H.M.S. Barracouta in 1876. The image, based on a sketch by Assistant Paymaster Rudge, captures the chaotic scene of the clash that occurred when the British warship attempted to assert its authority over the Samoan islands. The scene unfolds at Mulininu, where the King of Samoa, Captain Stevens, the consuls, and friendly chiefs, accompanied by a guard of honor from the Barracouta, had arrived with the intention of establishing peaceful relations. However, tensions escalated when Sub-Lieutenant Ommanney reported that armed natives were moving through the bush. Despite the unexpected turn of events, the guns of the marines were not yet loaded. Lieutenant M'Leod, with a small group of men, ventured into the bush to investigate. Upon entering a hut, he discovered it filled with armed natives, who refused to relinquish their weapons. As M'Leod attempted to enforce his demands, a shot was heard outside, signaling the beginning of a general action. The conflict between the native Samoans and the British crew of the Barracouta was a significant event in the history of European colonization in the Pacific. This engraving offers a glimpse into the intense and often violent encounters between European powers and indigenous peoples as they sought to assert control over new territories.
