Admiral Sir Michael Seymour presenting the Victoria Cross, on Southsea Common..., 1865. Creator: Unknown
Admiral Sir Michael Seymour presenting the Victoria Cross, on Southsea Common, to three of the Naval Brigade engaged at Simonosaki, 1865. Engraving of a sketch by Mr. F. L. Bedwell. 'The crew of the Euryalus were drawn up in two divisions...after a salute and marching past, they formed a square, within which the performance of the ceremony took place. The Admiral said a few words to each of the brave fellows as he affixed the cross to his breast. They had earned this distinction by individual acts of gallantry in the storming of the Japanese stockades at Somonosaki, on the 4th September 1864. The first was Mr. Duncan Gordon Boyes...The second was Thomas Pride...and the third was William Seeley'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865
