Accident at the Entry Lock of the East India Docks, Blackwall, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Accident at the Entry Lock of the East India Docks, Blackwall, [London], 1858. The vessels were the brig Ocean, of Shoreham, bound to Swansea, with a cargo of copper ore, and the collier brig Lustre, from South Shields, laden with coals. The Ocean had nearly got out of the lock when the Lustre came in from the river, and in progressing up the lock and passing the Ocean they became jammed. As the tide receded the position of the ships became most critical. The collier, with her heavy cargo of coals, careened over on to the starboard side of the Ocean, crushing her bulwarks and beams. The work of discharge and dismantling the vessels went on during the night, but on the flowing of the tide it was discovered that both vessels had sustained such damage that they filled...nothing could enter or pass out of the lock, and it was supposed that it would be necessary to blow them up; but on Thursday week they were raised, and towed out into the river...thus freeing the lock of the serious obstruction which had interrupted all communication with the river since the accident occurred...The mishap will occasion a serious loss to the company'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the aftermath of a tragic accident that occurred at the Entry Lock of the East India Docks in Blackwall, London, in 1858. The image depicts the damaged vessels, the brig Ocean from Shoreham and the collier brig Lustre from South Shields, which had collided while attempting to navigate the lock. The Ocean, bound for Swansea with a cargo of copper ore, had almost exited the lock when the Lustre, laden with coal, entered from the river. As the tide receded, the position of the ships became increasingly precarious, and the collier, with its heavy cargo, careened over onto the starboard side of the Ocean, crushing its bulwarks and beams. The ensuing hours were spent in the arduous task of discharging and dismantling the vessels. However, as the tide flowed back in, it was discovered that both ships had sustained such significant damage that they were unable to be repaired. The lock, a crucial passageway for vessels entering and exiting the river, was now blocked, halting all communication with the river and causing a significant disruption. The accident was reported in the Illustrated London News, which described the event as a 'serious mishap' that would result in substantial losses. Despite initial fears that both vessels would need to be destroyed, they were eventually raised and towed out of the lock, freeing the passageway and restoring communication with the river.
