Henry Ireton was a prominent figure in 17th century England, known for his role as an English general during the English Civil War. Born in 1611, he played a significant part in the army of Parliament and fought alongside Oliver Cromwell. His contributions to the war were immortalized in various artworks such as c. 1650 oil on canvas portrait and engravings like "The Execution of Oliver Cromwell" from c. 1661. Ireton's military prowess is evident in depictions like "Ireton taken Prisoner at the Battle of Naseby" where he is shown leading troops into battle with unwavering determination. Despite being captured during this conflict, his legacy remained intact. Tragically, Henry Ireton passed away in November 1651 but continued to be remembered through posthumous engravings that showcased his commanding presence and leadership qualities. One notable event linked to Ireton was the posthumous "execution" of him along with Oliver Cromwell and John Bradshaw on January 30th, 1661 - exactly twelve years after King Charles I's beheading. This act ordered by King Charles II aimed to defile those responsible for his father's death, even though all three had died naturally. Today, Henry Ireton remains an important historical figure whose bravery and dedication are celebrated through artistic representations like G Howse's painting depicting Mortlake, Richmond upon Thames circa 1845 or illustrations found in books published as late as 1899.
