EDITORS COMMENTS
Colonel John Reed: A Dedicated Soldier and Parliamentarian". This print showcases Colonel John Reed, a prominent figure in 17th-century England. Painted by an unknown artist around 1650, this oil on canvas portrait is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. Colonel John Reed's life was marked by his unwavering commitment to the Parliamentarian cause during one of England's most tumultuous periods. Born in 1632, he joined the military at a young age and rose through the ranks to become a colonel in Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army. During the Second Civil War (1648-1649), Colonel Reed commanded the Parliamentarian garrison stationed at Poole Castle. His leadership skills and dedication to duty were evident as he fiercely defended parliamentary interests against Royalist forces. However, with King Charles II's restoration, Colonel Reed found himself on uncertain ground. Fleeing to the American colonies for safety, he eventually settled in Warwick, Rhode Island. Later on, he made Norwalk, Connecticut his home. This remarkable portrait captures not only Colonel John Reed's resolute spirit but also serves as a testament to his significant contributions during a pivotal era of English history. Through this painting, we are reminded of his bravery as both an officer and soldier who fought passionately for political ideals that shaped nations.
