EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures Salvador Segui in the 1920s, a prominent figure in Catalan anarcho-syndicalism. Known as "El noi del sucre" or "the sugar boy," Segui was a key member of the Confederacion Nacional del Trabajo (CNT), advocating for workers' rights and social empowerment.
In the midst of political turmoil and paramilitary actions within the CNT, Segui stood alongside Angel Pestana in opposition to violent tactics. His dedication to promoting emancipation as a means of empowering laborers made him a target for those who sought to maintain control over Catalonia's workforce.
Tragically, on March 10, 1923, while finalizing plans to advance his vision of social justice through worker solidarity, Segui fell victim to assassination at the hands of gunmen aligned with Catalan employers' interests. His untimely death marked a significant loss for the anarchist movement and left a void in the fight for equality and liberation.
Through this poignant image from the Universal History Archive/UIG collection, we are reminded of Salvador Segui's unwavering commitment to challenging oppressive systems and striving towards a more just society. His legacy lives on as an inspiration for all those who continue to resist injustice and advocate for collective liberation.
