7342055 Portrait of the Groeningen'. Built 1641. 48-guns. Chartered by Denmark 1666-1667 and not thereafter mentioned. Also called Stad Groeningen, Wapen van Groeningen and Zwarte Arend, c.1666 (offset, graphite) by Velde, Willem van de, the Younger (1633-1707); 41.4x29.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Younger
This is a portrait of the Groeningen viewed from the starboard quarter. The drying sails: courses, topsails and spritsails are all loosed. The fore and the main yards are both slightly lowered and the topsail sheets are let to fly. On the ship's tafferel are the arms of Groeningen, surrounded by a wreath. On the rail above are the arms of Amsterdam, positioned between two dolphins. There are two mouldings across the stern of the ship, below the tafferel and above the upper counter, known as the slingerlijst. Between the two slingerslijsts here are crossed anchors.
This is an offset from accurate originals. It has been worked up lightly in pencil. The ship's ensign and shaking sails have been added in very rapid pencil. It has been approximately dated to 1666 by its subject and watermark. The work is signed W.V.V. (J)'.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait print captures the majestic 'Groeningen', a 48-gun ship built in 1641 and chartered by Denmark from 1666-1667. Also known as 'Stad Groeningen', 'Wapen van Groeningen', and 'Zwarte Arend', this vessel exudes power and elegance in its depiction by artist Willem van de Velde, the Younger. The detailed image showcases the ship from the starboard quarter, with its sails drying in the wind. The fore and main yards are slightly lowered, while the topsail sheets flutter freely. The arms of Groeningen adorn the tafferel, surrounded by a wreath, while Amsterdam's arms sit proudly above on the rail. Van de Velde expertly captures every intricate detail of the ship, from its crossed anchors to its shaking sails added in rapid pencil strokes. The offset print has been lightly worked up in graphite, giving it a timeless quality that transports viewers back to 1666. This piece is not just a representation of a historical vessel; it is a work of art that encapsulates both the grandeur and craftsmanship of naval history. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this portrait of the 'Groeningen' is sure to captivate all who gaze upon it.
