7337998 The immortality of Nelson, 1807 (oil on canvas) by West, Benjamin (1738-1820); 90.8x76.2 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Benjamin West
Although the victory at Trafalgar, 21 October 1805, was a cause for national celebration, for Britain it also resulted in the loss of Nelson. His death at the height of his fame inspired a cult of hero-worship and images of Nelson were used to elevate him. Similarly the function of this apotheosis was to use allegory to this end. West has adapted the classical reading of an apotheosis to emphasize both heroism and sacrifice. He has reinforced the message by creating a composition expressing Nelson's nautical achievements.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
The painting "The Immortality of Nelson" by Benjamin West captures the essence of heroism and sacrifice in the aftermath of Admiral Lord Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The victory was a cause for national celebration, but it also marked the loss of a beloved figure whose fame inspired a cult of hero-worship.
In this allegorical depiction, West uses classical symbolism to elevate Nelson to divine status, portraying him as an angelic figure surrounded by heavenly beings. The wounded limb symbolizes his ultimate sacrifice for his country, while the vibrant colors convey both mourning and celebration.
Through this composition, West immortalizes Nelson's nautical achievements and underscores his legacy as a British hero. The painting serves as a poignant reminder of the cost of war and the enduring spirit of those who make great sacrifices for their nation.
As viewers gaze upon this masterpiece at the National Maritime Museum in London, they are transported back to a time when Britain mourned its fallen hero but also celebrated his indelible mark on history. The image resonates with emotion and reverence, capturing the eternal spirit of Admiral Lord Nelson in all his glory.
