EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a large pair of library globes, the terrestrial and celestial, created by the renowned Dutch cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu. The terrestrial globe, crafted between 1645 and 1648, features thirty-six hand-colored engraved half gores and two polar calottes meticulously pasted onto a plaster sphere. Its exquisite details include labeled continents with mountains, rivers, and towns in Latin script adorned with animals, figures, and monsters. Notably, California is depicted as an island while Frisland appears unlike that in Van der Krogt's work. The celestial globe dates back to circa 1630 and exhibits twelve hand-colored engraved half gores displaying constellations following Mercator's style. Texts in Latin, Greek, and Arabic provide alternative names for the stars categorized into six levels of magnitude. Nebulae are indicated separately without a cartouche. Both globes rest on square stained wood plinth bases added later. The terrestrial globe stands at an impressive height of 99 cm (26 inches), while its celestial counterpart matches it precisely. These magnificent library globes serve not only as navigational tools but also as works of art due to their intricate engravings and vibrant colors. They offer a glimpse into the scientific knowledge available during Blaeu's time while showcasing his exceptional craftsmanship. This print captures these extraordinary pieces from a private collection for all to admire their beauty and historical significance.
