EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Capture of New Orleans: The Fleet Passing Forts on the Mississippi, c. 1862" depicts a pivotal moment in American history. The engraving, created by Charles Parsons after an original artwork, measures 20.5 x 17.5 cm and is housed in the Free Library of Philadelphia. The image showcases an elevated view of the intense battle at the mouth of the Mississippi River during the Civil War. For five days, Admiral David Farragut led a relentless bombardment against St. Philip and Jackson forts that blocked his fleet's passage to New Orleans. In this scene, Union Navy ships can be seen engaging in fierce combat with Confederate defenses. From left to right, we can identify several US Navy vessels involved in this historic event: Varuna valiantly fights through iron-clad gunboats while Brooklyn, Pawnee, Hartford (Farragut's flagship), Pensacola, Mississippi, Louisiana (an iron-plated battery exploding), and Manassas (a ram) contribute their might to secure victory. Ultimately, Farragut's perseverance paid off as he successfully captured New Orleans from Confederate control. This significant triumph marked a turning point in the war and dealt a severe blow to Southern morale. Engraved by W. Ridgeway for wider distribution and preservation purposes; this print serves as both a visual record and testament to the bravery displayed by those who fought during this critical chapter in American history.
