EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a remarkable piece of military history - the Shako plate, dating back to the late 19th century. Crafted from brass, this intricately designed plate is associated with the renowned 28th (The North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot. The die-struck design features a laurel wreath encircling a frosted Garter bearing the iconic Garter motto. Within this emblematic motif are pierced numerals, proudly displaying "28" on a frosted background. The entire composition is crowned by an exquisite monarchial crown, symbolizing regal authority. On the reverse side of this magnificent artifact are two sturdy brass loop fittings, strategically placed on each side of the Garter for secure attachment to the shako headgear worn by soldiers in battle. This historic Shako plate serves as both a badge and identification for members of the regiment during their service in Victorian-era England. It represents not only their affiliation with one of Britain's esteemed infantry units but also their dedication to upholding military traditions and values. Now preserved within London's National Army Museum, this finely crafted piece stands as a testament to British military heritage and offers us an intriguing glimpse into the past. Its meticulous metalwork and attention to detail make it an invaluable addition to any collection or exhibition dedicated to militaria enthusiasts worldwide.
