EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of military history, the Shako plate from 1855-61. Created by the English School in the 19th century, this gilt metal plate is currently housed at the National Army Museum in London. The plate itself is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. It features an eight-pointed rayed star with a Victorian crown slightly displacing its top point. At the center of the star lies a round Garter, adorned with smooth lettering of the Garter Motto on a matte ground and surrounded by smooth edges. The Garter also boasts an ornate tag hanging from its pendant tip. With slight doming and horizontal ribbing, the center within the Garter adds depth and texture to this magnificent piece. Most notably, it proudly displays the number "40" in Arabic numerals as relief work. On its reverse side, there is a wire eyeloop fastening soldered at one end for easy attachment. Inscribed with "40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot 1786-1881" this shako plate represents not only identification but also symbolizes honor and pride associated with infantry regiments during that era. A true treasure for enthusiasts of militaria and historical artifacts alike, this shako plate provides us with insight into Victorian military fashion while serving as a reminder of our rich heritage.
