Grenade-thrower, 1750 (inset) Grenadier Guardsman, 1939 (colour photo)
8668618 Grenade-thrower, 1750 (inset) Grenadier Guardsman, 1939 (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Grenade-thrower, 1750 (inset) Grenadier Guardsman, 1939. Grenadiers (i.e. grenade-throwers) were first attached to the King's Royal Regiment of Guards (as the Regiment was then known) in 1678. The present name of the famous Grenadier Guards in not, however, directly connected with grenade-throwing, but was awarded in commemoration of great gallantry at the Battle of Waterloo, when the Guards defeated the French Imperial Guards. On 29 July 1815, the Prince Regent gave his approval to the Regiment's new title of "The First or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards." Our illustration shows a grenade-thrower of the 20th Foot, 1750, with (inset) a picture of a First or Grenadier Guardsman of to-day. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the evolution of military attire and weaponry over centuries, showcasing a Grenade-thrower from 1750 alongside a Grenadier Guardsman from 1939. The contrast between the two soldiers is striking, with the older image depicting a soldier armed with grenades and the newer one showing a member of the prestigious Grenadier Guards in full regalia.
The history behind these iconic figures is as fascinating as their appearance. Originally attached to the King's Royal Regiment of Guards in 1678, grenade-throwers played a crucial role in warfare. However, it was not their explosive expertise that led to the naming of the renowned Grenadier Guards. Instead, this honor was bestowed upon them after their heroic victory at the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon's forces.
In this illustration, we see a glimpse into both past and present military customs and traditions. The intricate details of each uniform tell stories of valor and sacrifice passed down through generations. This image serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication displayed by soldiers throughout history, honoring their legacy for future generations to admire and respect.
