7337882 Midshipman Robert Deans (1790-1867), 19th century (oil painting) by British School, (19th century); 76.2x63.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: British School
A half-length portrait in midshipman's uniform almost full face, but with his head turned very slightly to the left. His right hand is thrust into his tunic and he has his top hat under his left arm. Deans joined the navy 1804 and this was painted in about 1807 in the Mediterranean by the same artist who painted BHC3124 and BHC2639. He served in the Mediterranean and Lisbon stations as a midshipman until 1810. During this time he was in the Royal Sovereign, Ville de Paris, and San Josef, the flagships of Edward Thornborough, Lord Collingwood and Sir Charles Cotton. In May 1811 he was wounded in a boat attack on the Norwegian coast and was confirmed in his lieutenancy for this action. In 1814-1816 he was flag lieutenant to Sir William Johnstone Hope and Sir Home Popham on the home station. He became a commander in 1818 and continued to serve afloat until he was made post captain in 1838. He was not employed afterwards but in 1857 was made a rear-admiral on the retired list and promoted to vice-admiral in 1864.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil painting captures the essence of Midshipman Robert Deans, a distinguished naval officer from the 19th century. Standing tall in his midshipman's uniform, Deans exudes confidence and determination as he gazes directly at the viewer with a slight turn of his head. His right hand is casually tucked into his tunic, while his top hat rests under his left arm.
Painted around 1807 in the Mediterranean by an unknown British artist, this portrait showcases Deans' early years in the navy. Serving on various ships including the 'Royal Sovereign', 'Ville de Paris', and 'San Josef', he quickly rose through the ranks due to his bravery and leadership skills.
In May 1811, Deans was wounded during a daring boat attack on the Norwegian coast, earning him a promotion to lieutenant for his valor. Throughout his career, he continued to excel in various roles until finally achieving the rank of post captain in 1838.
Despite retiring from active duty, Deans was honored with promotions to rear-admiral and vice-admiral later in life. This painting serves as a timeless tribute to a dedicated naval officer whose legacy continues to inspire generations of sailors.
